Val Kilmer's Neighbors Want Him to Apologize

Val Kilmer is feeling the heat.

The actor, who wants to turn his 6,000-acre New Mexico ranch into an upscale bed-and-breakfast, is under intense pressure this week from neighbors trying to block the project, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Kilmer, 50, found himself in the danger zone with locals when he applied for permits for the venture, launching protests from fellow Santa Fe area residents still upset about comments he made in past magazine interviews.

The actor was quoted in a 2003 interview with Rolling Stone as saying his neighborhood was "the homicide capital of the Southwest" and that "80 percent of the people in my county are drunk."

Two years later, Esquire published an interview with the actor in which he said he understood how to play a Vietnam veteran better than someone who had actually fought in the war, and that the soldiers were "borderline criminal or poor ... wretched kids" who only served in the military because they "got beat up by their dads" or "couldn't finagle a scholarship."

Kilmer later said he was misquoted both times.

In February, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported that he denied disparaging Vietnam veterans during a visit to the state capitol, saying, "I didn't make that statement. ... I have nothing but praise and respect for veterans."

At a hearing to discuss Kilmer's application for permits, The Journal reported, a group of area residents and veterans demanded an official apology from the actor before allowing him to host paying guests at his Pecos River Ranch.

Jesus Lopez, the county attorney, agreed, told The Journal that Kilmer's quotes were "incendiary" and created a "clear and present danger threatening public safety."

The New Mexico ACLU then jumped into the fray and offered to represent Kilmer, though the organization did not respond to calls or e-mails, according to The Journal.

David Salazar, chairman of the local commission reviewing the request for permits, told The Journal that Kilmer's application will be reviewed on its merits aside from the controversy. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, and Salazar said Kilmer is expected to attend.

Kilmer, who hinted in recent years that he was considering a run for New Mexico governor, recently told local newspaper the Albuquerque Journal that he has tried to be a good neighbor, supporting local schools and wildlife preservation.

"It's very upsetting for my friends," he said. "I'm not worried at all about the reaction because I just see it as an opportunity to bring people together."

The Associated Press reported that calls and e-mails to Kilmer and his publicist have not been returned.

Ozzy Osbourne praises Michael Jackson

Ozzy Osbourne is to tour the world.

Although he is approaching his 62nd birthday in December, former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne is to play a number of dates in the UK and US in coming months.

The international tour will promote his latest album `Scream' - his first for three years - taking him to warm-up gigs at Folkestone on June 29 and then Oxford on July 1 and London on July 3.

After a short break the rocker will head to San Bernardino, California on August 14, followed by Chicago, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Camden and Boston throughout the month.

Despite his seemingly limitless energy, the self styled Prince of Darkness admitted recently he has been deeply affected by the recent deaths of fellow heavy metal musicians Ronnie James Dio - the singer who replaced him in Black Sabbath - and Slipknot bassist Paul Gray.

He told Heraldsun.com.au: "When you get to 60 you're on the downward slide. I'm 61 now. In the past month so many guys I know have died. Ronnie James Dio died of cancer, a guy from Slipknot killed himself. you have to live for each minute. In my youth I'd wish my life away. I wish I could have them times back. But you can't."

The musician also lashed out at those who accuse wife and manager Sharon of forcing him to tour saying: "Some people think Sharon pushes me to go on tour. My wife does not push me out on stage. If I really didn't want to go out I'd say, `F**k you, I ain't going,' and I wouldn't go."

LEANN RIMES LEGALLY SINGLE AFTER FINALIZING DIVORCE FROM

LeAnn Rimes' divorce from Dean Sheremet was finalized Saturday (June 19), according to Us Weekly. Rimes is currently dating actor Eddie Cibrian, who exited his role on CSI: Miami last week. Cibrian's divorce from his wife, Brandi Glanville, is underway. Rimes and Sheremet married in 2002 and separated at the end of 2009. Rimes is planning to release a new album of cover songs, featuring her updated rendition of John Anderson's "Swingin'," later this year.

CHELSEA CLINTON TO HER SUPER-SECRET WEDDING - REFUSES TO INVITE STRANGERS — OR CELEBRITIES

Chelsea Clinton, former first daughter, announced her engagement to Marc Mezvinsky in November 2009. Since then, Chelsea Clinton has been under scrutiny with media and political pundits worried about everything from her ring to former President Bill Clinton's weight at the reception. So, it's no wonder that NY Magazine has already gotten a hold of her guest list and politicized it. According to the magazine:

There will be only 400 names on the guest list, a good size for a wedding by ordinary standards, but barely big enough to accommodate the people who slept in the Lincoln Bedroom during Bill Clinton’s presidency. So planning it has been a diplomatic problem of the highest order. “Donors are expecting to be invited,” says a major Clinton fund-raiser. Then there are the campaign, State Department, and Clinton Foundation staff, plus foreign dignitaries and both Clinton and Obama White House officials.
Longtime Friend of Bill and former DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe, who grew up in Syracuse, is said to be “very involved” in the selection of the location, according to one insider. Other invitees include Bill Clinton’s special assistant Doug Band, former White House social secretary Capricia Marshall, and top Hillary Clinton aide and former traveling chief of staff Huma Abedin. Probably not on the guest list, according to this source: Bill’s buddy Ron Burkle.

WOW! That's what we call a who's who of the DNC. And we just know the Obama's will be present... Poor Chelsea Clinton, even her most private moments are taken away by her parents need for attention.

Why Skin Cancer Is on the Rise - especially among young women

For years and years now, millions of sun worshippers across the country would hit the beaches during summer to work on the perfect, golden tan. However, the advent of indoor tanning salons now allows Americans to sport a sun-kissed look year-round. And as more and more people pursue a perpetual summer-style tan, dermatologists have begun noticing a significant rise in skin cancer incidents, especially among young women.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, still makes up just 3 percent of all skin cancers, and results in about 8,000 deaths a year, according to the National Cancer Institute. But three factors have doctors alarmed: The rates of this cancer are rising; it has become the most common cancer for young people; and many of the cases result from the preventable, but addictive, behavior of indoor suntanning.

"In the last few decades, it's certainly been on the rise. And some people think that may be a result of behavior, and UV exposure," said Jennifer Stein, an assistant professor of dermatology at New York University's Langone Medical Center. "This is a very serious cancer, and this is a behavior that's preventable."

Tanning and cancer go hand-in-hand

Without tanning beds, soaking up the rays was limited to clear days in the summer. The invention of the tanning bed changed that, and throughout the 1990s, the rapid proliferation of tanning salons provided venues for millions of people to sunbathe regardless of weather, season, or time of day.

Since 1992, the indoor tanning industry has grown five-fold, with 28 million indoor tanners in the United States supporting a billion-dollar-a-year business, said Maria Tsoukas, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

During that same period, melanoma rates have increased by 2 percent in the general population, Stein said. Amongst young women, who make up 71 percent of tanning salon customers, incidents of melanoma have increased by 2.2 percent, Stein said. Over that time, skin cancer also became the most common form of cancer for Americans ages 25-29, a group that traditionally shows very low cancer rates, Stein said.

"We see a surprising number of young women coming in with melanoma, and a lot of them say they've used tanning beds," Stein told LiveScience.com. "By far, by far, the majority of users of indoor tanning beds are young women."

While some dermatologists believe that other factors, such as increased UV exposure resulting from the hole in the ozone layer, contribute to the rise in melanoma rates over the last 18 years, the irrefutable link between indoor tanning and melanoma makes tanning beds the prime suspect, Tsoukas said.

In a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan, frequent tanning bed users proved three times more likely to develop melanoma than non-users, and subjects that used tanning beds for any amount of time showed a 74-percent higher rate of melanoma than non-users, according to research published online May 27 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

That study did not investigate the percentage of indoor tanners who developed melanoma, rather showing the difference between users and non-users.

How tanning causes cancer

Indoor and outdoor tanning can be dangerous, because the same ultraviolet radiation that provokes a tan also damages DNA. In fact, exposure to the mid-day sun can produce as many as 40,000 DNA errors an hour, said Regina Santella, a professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York.

The UV light causes the DNA molecule thymine to bind to adjacent thymine molecules in a manner that renders both molecules unreadable during transcriptions, Santella said. Transcription is a step in which the body reads the DNA instructions the cell will later follow. When those thymine errors occur in areas of DNA that regulate cell growth, skin cancers like melanoma can begin to develop, Santella said.

Most times, skin cells rapidly repair most of those 40,000 errors, but over time repeated errors can cause cancer or other problems.

Tanning is actually the body's response to that damage, with the darker color produced by skin adding an additional layer of protection for the DNA, Stein said. However, when the body produces the hormone that initiates tanning, it also produces a secondary molecule in the endorphin family, said Scott Feldman, a professor of dermatology at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Endorphins are chemicals that transmit feelings of pleasure and happiness. In effect, exposure to UV radiation gets tanning bed users high, Feldman said. And like any high, tanning can become addictive.

In 2005, Feldman conducted a study where he gave volunteers endorphin-blocking chemicals before they used a tanning bed. The study aimed to test whether frequent tanning salon customers would enjoy the experience as much if their bodies didn't produce endorphins. They didn't. And even before the frequent tanners used the tanning bed, they showed signs of physical addiction to tanning.

"When we started doing the experiments, the first couple volunteers got sick, and we said 'Hey, that's unexpected,'" Feldman told LiveScience. "We were putting them into withdrawal."

Tan responsibly

With studies proving that tanning bed use causes both addiction and cancer, many dermatologists have begun comparing the practice to other forms of drug abuse like drinking and cigarette smoking, Feldman said. And much like with smoking and drug abuse, doctors have told their tan-loving patients to "just say no."

"There is no point to it. Someone wants to look darker? Gimme a break. For cosmetic reasons, people risk getting a fatal cancer. To me, it's a public health hazard because it has no upside," Santella said. "Don't go to skin tanning salons. Simple as that."

Others advocate that tanning salon patrons take an approach more like drinking alcohol, with moderation and responsibility mitigating the long-term health effects, Feldman said.

"We see the cancer patients, but there are millions of people tanning, and considering the number of people doing it and not getting cancer, it's probably not the first problem we need to solve in America," Feldman said. "If a woman comes in, and I see cigarettes in her bag, I'll tell her to stop smoking before I tell her to stop tanning. Lung cancer is considerably worse."

But those approaches only tackle the physical side of tanning without getting to the root problem that drives millions of Americans, young women in particular, to engage in a behavior they often know raises their risk of a deadly disease, Stein said. To fix the social pressures behind the rise in this largely preventable cancer, America might need to refine its idea of beauty.

"I've met people who said they couldn't stop tanning. They wanted to stop, but couldn't. They liked the way it felt and they felt pressure from their friends," Stein said. "I think we really need to change that notion in this country that looking tan means looking healthy, because we know that tans are not healthy."

Serena Williams eye on a crowning achievement-Wimbledon title

Serena Williams way of getting ready for Wimbledon.

WIMBLEDON, England – Serena Williams attended a Green Day concert over the weekend and worked on her curtsy.

Tennis traditionalists have long derided the Williams sisters' unorthodox preparation for Grand Slam events, but hey, it works. At Wimbledon, Serena and Venus have combined to win eight of the past 10 titles, and they're seeded 1-2 in the tournament beginning Monday.

Serena tweaked her practice regimen by polishing her curtsy in anticipation of a visit Thursday from Queen Elizabeth II. With Green Day in town for a concert Saturday night at Wembley Stadium, she — Serena, not the monarch — also made time to take in the show.

It was like a workout, Serena joked.

"Did a little cardio there, jumping around a little bit," she said. "It was amazing. Everyone knows I'm a massive Green Day fan. They were so close; no chance I could have missed it."

Williams has time to catch her breath before her opening match Tuesday as defending champion against Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal. Venus was to play Monday against Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay.

As in the past, the sisters skipped the grass-court warmup tournaments and haven't played since the French Open. They took the same approach last year, and it worked: Serena won her third Wimbledon title by beating Venus in the final.

Serena shrugs off the pressure of high expectations, saying Wimbledon's like playing at the Greensboro Open.

"I approach every match the same, really, whether I'm here or at a tournament in North Carolina or South Carolina," she said. "I just kind of look at it all the same. You go here and you do the best that you can and you try to just go for it. ...

"I don't feel pressure. I'm here to win Wimbledon like the other 127 people in the draw. That's kind of how I look at it. Whether I come out with a win or I don't, it's just an opportunity for me to be here."

It could be an opportunity to meet the queen, too. On Thursday, her royal highness is expected to visit Wimbledon for the first time since 1977.

"I found out that she was coming," Serena said. "I thought, 'Wow, this is really, really cool. She hasn't been to this tournament in just forever.' I thought, 'Wow, I just got to make sure I'm here on Thursday.'"

Williams will be scheduled to play Thursday if she wins her opening match. She said her curtsy needs work.

"It's a little extreme," she said. "I have a lot of arm movement. I get really low. So I have to tone it down."

Others scheduled to play their opening matches Tuesday include 2004 champion Maria Sharapova, French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur, 2008 men's champion Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, trying again to become the first British man to win Wimbledon since 1936.

London rock concerts aside, Sharapova said the lead-up to Wimbledon is special.

"The week before, when there's just the players, the groundsmen getting the last bits and pieces out there, knowing that something big is around the corner, you really feel that atmosphere," Sharapova said. "Then you see the dark clouds coming out. You're like, `Yeah, that's coming.'"

Even in bad weather, some tennis will be played because of the 1-year-old retractable roof over Centre Court. That's where Nadal will likely face wild card Kei Nishikori of Japan in the opening round.

It will be Nadal's first match at Wimbledon since he beat Federer in their memorable 2008 final. Last year, the Spaniard withdrew shortly before the tournament because of knee tendinitis.

Nadal is coming off his fifth French Open title and an unbeaten but grueling clay-court season. He celebrated with a brief break a week ago back home in Mallorca.

"I went for a party with the friends," he said. "I played golf. I go to the beach. So I had a perfect Sunday. I need it."

A recharged Nadal might be the biggest threat to top-seeded Roger Federer, who is trying to join Pete Sampras and 19th-century champion Willie Renshaw as the only men to win Wimbledon seven times.

Federer was to play his opening match Monday against Alejandro Falla.

Amanda Bynes, Teen actress,Retires From Acting at the age of 24

Amanda Bynes, teen actress, known for her work on 'All That' and 'The Amanda Show' on Nickelodeon decided to drop the motherload of information via Twitter, telling her fans that she's planning to retire from acting altogether. Even though, Amanda Bynes is slated to star in the comedy 'Easy A' alongside Gemma Stone, Amanda swears this will be her last performance. Here's what Amanda Bynes' fans found out via Twitter:

"I’ve never written the movies & tv shows I’ve been apart of I’ve only acted like the characters the producers or directors wanted me to play. Being an actress isn’t as fun as it may seem. If I don’t love something anymore I stop doing it. I don’t love acting anymore so I’ve stopped doing it. I know 24 is a young age to retire but you heard it here first I’ve retired.”

Amanda Bynes, at 24, is a bit young to retire from acting despite the fact that she's been acting on Nickelodeon shows since she was only nine years old. Furthermore, she hasn't actually proclaimed what her plans for the future are once in a post-acting world. Directing? Producing? We believe we've seen this act before. Michael Jordan. Jay-Z. Now, Amanda Bynes? She'll be back... they always come back.

Leonard Nimoy honored by the town of Vulcan

During a visit to Vulcan LEONARD NIMOY was overwhelmed, Canada after residents in the STAR TREK-themed town arranged a parade in his honour.

The Star Trek legend was celebrated during his April (10) visit to the region, which shares its name with the home planet of his most famous character Mr. Spock, and has become a popular tourist attraction for fans of the franchise.

Nimoy, who announced his retirement from Hollywood in April (10), visited the town and even posed next to a bronze statue of his likeness, before watching the locals put on a procession.

And the sci-fi icon admits he was delighted with the small-town tribute.

He says, "I've never had an experience as touching as that in my life. Spock has been a role model for a lot of people by showing dignity, intelligence and professionalism. I'm very proud of that.

Mexico Vs South Africa 2010 Opening Game

December 04, 2009 — (ONLY 2 MORE HOURS FOR THE WORLD CUP!) TUNE IN TO ESPN FOR THE FIRST MATCH IN ENGLISH, OTHERWISE UNIVISION FOR SPANISH!!!

As we all now, based on the draw that took place earlier this day, Mexico gets the greatest opportunity of the teams lifetime to initiate the opening games with South Africa on 6/11/10. Both Mexico and South Africa are in group A, along with France and Uruguay. The game will be played in Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa and will promise to be a very exciting fist match.

Comment on what anyone thinks about the match up and the outcome.
